Ren Xin tributes her love for dance to Michelle Lo.
While performing and choreographing for The Human Expression Second Company in Singapore, Ren Xin studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. She went on to complete her BFA at the Purchase Conservatory of Dance, and then danced with LeeSaar The Company in New York in 2011/2012. Ren Xin has presented her own works in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and the USA, and has performed in works by Wong Jyh Shyong, Choi Myung Hyun, Kuik Swee Boon, and Shen Wei, amongst others. Back home, she recently performed in the Asia Pacific Impro! and d'MOTION Festival. While conditions are tough, Ren Xin finds it makes more sense to make work in the context and community of home. Ren Xin credits her experience of improvisation and instant performance to Keith Henessy, Miguel Gutierrez, and Kathleen Hermesdorf. For her, improvisation is a state, just as performance is a state, just as living is a state, just as Selangor is a state. Just, had to do that.

Ng Chor Guan is one of Malaysia’s most sought-after music composers and sound designers.

In 2011, British visual arts pioneers The Light Surgeons develop “Super Everything” for which he is composer, musical director and theremin player, was performed again at the Houston Cinema Art Festival in Houston, USA, in November 2012, and toured the United Kingdom in March 2013. 

His music have been presented all over the world including the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen in Germany, Asian Contemporary Theatre Project in Japan, NyobaKan Butoh Festival, Silk Road Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong International Arts Carnival, Surabaya Performing Art Festival, The Studio Singapore, Sydney Fashion Week, Hong Kong Cultural Ambassador Program, George Town Festival and more. His works have also been performed in France, Holland, Italy, Canada and Korea.

Chor Guan introduced groundbreaking concepts that have revolutionised the way audiences interact with the music or even participate in the performance. One of his most successful concepts is Mobile Phone Orchestra (MPO). In Malaysia, MPO was performed in George Town Festival, Melaka Art and Performance Festival and Toccata Studio Earth Hour. In 2012, he was invited to perform MPO at The Playable City Sprint at Bristol, UK organised by the British Council and Pervasive Media Centre. He was one of five Asians selected to represent the continent. He was then invited to Korea to perform MPO at the opening ceremony of the 7th Global RCE Conference organised by UNICEF. 

Chor Guan co-founded Toccata Studio, a hub for arts. Here, he launched New Music Series and Dance=Music series. The aim of these series is to cultivate a new cultural language for Malaysia that unites various media, musical disciplines and traditions.

Chor Guan’s film music was awarded Grand Prize in both the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival (France) and Art Film Fest (Slovakia). In 2011, he was awarded a scholarship by Goethe Institue.

Chor Guan also lectures at University Malaya and New Era College. He has also produced 11 albums.

INTERTWINED is a contemporary dance performance challenged the idea of collaboration. Choreographer Steve Goh, music composer Chor Guan Ng and set designer Lisa Foo come together and create a performing art piece that interacts between different arts disciplines, interpreting the word "intertwined" through their professional artistic language of each. A performing art piece that is based on interaction, moveable abstract origami set design that inspired the body movement of dancers, music that incorporate the ideas of body movement, dance movement that react to music rhythm, emotions coming from deep down of performers heart that interrelate to the environment. This performance seeks relationship between space and time, defines imagination and reality, symbolized consciousness and unconsciousness.

Three dancers including choreographer Steve Goh, Bee Hung Tan and Foong Siew Ching will perform on stage, bringing the audience a newly created stage performance. Through body movement and music, this performance brings audiences an exciting sensory experience.

ARTISTS BIOGRAPHY

Steve Goh (Choreographer/ Dancer)

A Sabah native, Steve Goh graduated from The Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts (APA). After returning from Europe as a freelance dancer, Steve founded Youth Studio of Dance in 2004 with Lee Swee Keong and Amy Len. In 2011, Steve founded JS Dance Theatre with Datin Jane. He has collaborated with choreographers from all over the globe including Rosalind Newman (New York), Pina Bausch (Germany), Natalie Weir (Australia), Tony Yap (Australia), Csaba Budday (Australia), Ng Teck Voon (Amsterdam), Helen Lai (Hong Kong), Ong Yong Lock (Hong Kong), Angela Liong (Singapore), Chen Wei Ya (China) and Lin Hwai Min (Taiwan). Between year 2006 to 2013, Steve has received numerous awards from BOH Cameronian Arts Awards including “Best Performer”, “Best Set Design”, “Best Choreographer in a Mixed Bill” and “Most Promising Artist”. 

Ng Chor Guan (Music Composer)

NG is an invigorating music composer and sound designer for theatre, dance, film, concert music and new media. He started his career as professional music composer during his years in London. In 2008, he was nominated for Cameronian Arts Awards Most Promising Artist. His music for films was awarded the Grand prizes in Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival in France and Artfilm Fest in Slovak Republic. In 2010, he was nominated the Best Music Composition, 1^st Selangor Youth Awards and awarded the Goethe Institute Scholarship in 2011. He was the musical director and composer as well as theremin player for Live Cinema Performance entitled “Super Everything” directed by The Light Surgeons. Lisa Foo (Set Designer)

Trained in architecture, she now practices design independently. Lisa has been involved in art projects and set installations, alone and in collaboration with others, for a few years now beginning with Art for Grabs 2007 in Kuala Lumpur. Recently, she has created and exhibited the eco-light sculptures depicting deep sea creatures from recycled plastic drinking bottles with her friend and formed LFSS in 2008. Her art and installation were also exhibited at Re-creation: Art & sustainability 2008 jointly organized by Balai Seni Lukis Negara, and The Light Show 2009, which she co-produced in Kuala Lumpur. Through the initiation of The River Art Project with choreographer-dancer, her eco-light installation expanded to the site-specific performance titled Reflections at Melaka Art and Performance Festival in 2010 and River Meets Light at George Town Festival 2011. In her creative experimentation with found objects, she is seeking for that transformation of the unexpected into art and beyond through sculptural installations.

Tan Bee Hung (Dancer)

LLB degree graduate. Trained predominantly in contemporary dance and has participated in various dance performances in Malaysia, Singapore, China, Germany etc. She was selected to participate in the 'International Young Choreographers Project' 2013 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Currently a full time dance instructor and dancer with Kwang Tung Dance Company.

Foong Siew Ching (Dancer)

Foong Siew Ching graduated from University Science Malaysia. She trained in contemporary dance and classical ballet. She has participated in various performances locally and internationally, including Singapore, China, Germany etc. She won Best Choreographer in a Mixed Bill at the 9^th Annual BOH Cameronian Arts Awards in 2012. She was one of the 7 selected emerging choreographers in the recently held Dance Escalator Program launched by MyDance Alliance. Currently she works as a dance instructor, choreographer and freelance dancer. She is also a dancer with the Kwang Tung Dance Company.

When Time Limps

Toccata Studio is proud to present an international collaboration contemporary dance 

performance “When Time Limps” choreograph by artist from Hong Kong Rebecca Wong, 

featured 3 innovative dancers including Rebecca Wong herself, Ivanhoe Lam and Cyrus Hui 

with local Malaysian music composer Chor Guan NG.  

There will be two performances of “When Time Limps” on 6 Sep and 7 Sep 2013, 8.30pm at 

Annex Gallery, Centre Market. Besides, They will conduct an improvisation workshop to 

explore human body movements. This workshop is open to public with or without experience in 

dance. This performance also supported by Mydance Alliance, British Council and JKKN 

（Jabatan Kebudayaan Dan Kesenian Negara）in developing new audiences in contemporary 

dance production. 

   

Together, the team brought us a dance piece inspired by Dali, a prominent Spanish surrealist

painter. This dance piece especially named after Dali’s most famous and most recognizable work 

“The Persistence of Memory” where we sees soft, melting pocket watch. This performance seeks 

relationship between space and time, defines dream and reality, symbolized consciousness and 

unconsciousness. Through body movement and music, this performance brings audiences an 

exciting sensory experience. 

From the choreographer, Rebecca Wong: 

Once encountering with Dali, I was totally attracted by his crazy and legendary life. Reading his 

diary again for the creation of this piece, apart of his showiness, his snobbishness, his insaneness, 

I discovered another Dali – an “absolute passionate and loyal-to-art” Dali, he touched and 

motivated me. I truly believe the magic would be continuously in ferment.

Choreographer / Dancer  - Wong Pik Kei, Rebecca (HONG KONG) 

Rebecca graduated from Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) in 2010, majoring

in Contemporary Dance and Choreography. She is enthusiastic about choreography and issued

numerous works during her time in HKAPA. She loves to cross over with different media and 

the collaboration works including site specific “Gorgeously Unexpected”, and multimedia 

production “Melaleuca Leucaendra” and “Cycle”. Her works include HKAPA Choreographic 

Workshop I “Journey”, site-specific “Invisible Waves” and graduation independent study 

project “Love at the time limped”. In April 2011, she staged her work, “The Museum of Ladies”, 

under the Real Show Case series of City Contemporary Dance Company, with Georgina LO and 

Juliana HO. She was also selected as one of the choreographers in “Emerging Choreographer 

Series 2009 – Dance x Men” produced by Hong Kong Dance Alliance. Her recent creative works 

include E-side Dance Company “Diving for Needles” - “Move Forward”, DanceArt “Room for 

Conversations”, Hong Kong Arts Center Open Dance “Reformatory”. She has worked with 

different artists over the globe, including MUI Cheuk Yin, Willy TSAO, Raewyn HILL (New 

Zealand) and Jaime REDFERN (Australia). She went to Malaysia, Taiwan and USA and 

exchanged with local dancers that widen her horizons in arts. Always looking for opportunities 

to give tries, she keeps writing her own dance language. 

Dancer - Hui Chun Kit, Cyrus (HONG KONG) 

Cyrus graduated from HKAPA with a concentration in modern dance and choreography. He 

pursued further study at Folkwang University of the Arts, Germany, under the Hong Kong 

Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund Scholarship. He is currently a freelance choreographer, 

performing artist and dance instructor. He has performed in Germany, France, Italy, Guangzhoug 

and Taiwan, and has been involved in a series of projects including Hong Kong Art Festival 

Contemporary Art Series I “The Last Zoo”, DanceArt “Overdue”, Hong Kong Theatre Design 

Company Ltd “Positioning”, New Force in Motion Series “Here it goes again” and Hong Kong 

Fringe Festival Bare Stage Project 09 “That’s Dance”. 

Dancer  - Lam Chun Ho, Ivanhoe (HONG KONG) 

After graduation from the diploma program of drama school and dance school at HKAPA, 

Ivanhoe continued his studies for a BFA degree at Rotterdam Dance Academy (the Netherlands), 

majoring in Choreography. His creative works staging in Rotterdam, Hague, Utrecht and 

Amsterdam include “Awakening”, a site-specific dance with Denmark visual artist Henrik 

Vibskov “27 Scenes”, “Ashes to Ashes”. “27 Scenes” was well received in ITs Festival in 

Amsterdam 2010 and Hong Kong International Dance Symposium 2010. Recent full-length 

piece “27” was presented in Hong Kong with the original cast from the Netherlands and local

dancers. He established Motion 27 Dance Theatre and currently is a freelance choreographer,

performing artist and tutor for theatre education.  

Composer  - Ng Chor Guan (MALAYSIA)

performance between contemporary dance and improvisation music.
